10cc - Deceptive Bends (1977)

MEMORY

This was a front to back... sort of, it was an All track Repeat...I had this baby on 8 Track. "The Things We Do For Love" was all over the radio, and when it first came out, I thought it was Queen. Which was, and still is my favorite band of all time. I remember I even sent away for a free Deceptive Bends Iron On from an ad in Circus magazine. I got it, ironed it on a t-Shirt, and it was my FIRST rock t-Shirt. This album is in my top 25, of all time, just because it was a unique album that crossed genres and planted deeply in my memory. There are so many great songs on here...

THE THINGS WE DO FOR LOVE

Plasmatics - Metal Priestess (1981)

MEMORY

This was a front to back listen that got played constantly. This was released after I saw her live in Milwaukee. I can honestly and truthfully  say I was there. I remember seeing the "Doom Song" on SCTC with Gil Fisher and thought how far Wendy had come to get musically credit for her work. And then on Solid Gold with Black Leather Monster. I wonder sometimes if she became what she hated.

Joe Jackson - I'm the Man (1979)

MEMORY
This album is a fantastic piece of New Wave that never got it's recognition. Most of the songs have that Two-Tone and Ska feel to them. After hearing the Time Square Soundtrack Joe Jackson became a recognized and respected name for me. This easily could have been on 80s soundtrack.

I'M THE MAN

Demon - Night of the Demon (1981)

MEMORY
From my list data, this was identified as Heavy Metal, and one of Heavy Metal's labels was 'Satan's Music'. Looking at the band name, title and cover...How appropriate. This is really good, but this is actually Hard Rock and sounds very much like Axe. This missed it's target audience by about 2 years.  HOLY SHIT! This was on the tape!

Van Duren - Staring At The Ceiling (1978)

DISCOVERED

This was a pleasant find, a Power Pop release with many many great tracks on it. I could have chosen almost any track. But I liked this one the best
CHEMICAL FIRE

Venus & the Razorblades - Songs from the Sunshine Jungle (1978)

DISCOVERED
A hidden treasure, late 70s Female Punk from Los Angeles. Wait...What's this.. oh Female and Male Vocals, ala The Rezillos...The female vocals are very reminiscent of The Runaways. The male vocals are a little harder remind me a little of Dead Boys meet The Vapors.

I WANNA BE WHERE THE BOYS ARE

Peter Criss - Out of Control (1980)

DISCOVERED

There was the 4 solos albums, and then there was this. No matter what I read or heard, it was labeled awful and certainly not KISS. So.... I listened to what everyone was saying, and never listened to this. I don't mind Peter Criss's vocals what so ever. His voice is better than Bob Dylan's or Tim Curry's. This release opens with a ballad, and then with a rock song that has an intro that reminds me a little of Doctor Love. Over all this is a rock album with a touch of blues, and nothing I would place in musical rotation. And..what's this....oh my ... a cover!!

Ethel the Frog - Ethel the Frog (1980)

DISCOVERED
Well, this is definitely an original band name, I did expect New Wave punk, but this is a Hard Rock band. or This seems a bit reserved and I wish they would have stepped it up a notch. This isn't bad, but this has that 'dated' sound that many bands of the late 70's have. I did find a decent cover though.

Share:

Gamma - Gamma 2 (1980)

DISCOVERED

Judging by the title and band name, I was expecting Jazz, or Jazz Fusion. This is pure Rock N Roll. This reminds me of lot like Axe meet Rainbow with a touch of Deep Purple. Once in a while it gets a little progressive, but nothing unbearable.
MEAN STREAK

Share:

Interview - Snakes & Lovers (1980)

DISCOVERED

A new band for me, based on the title, I would have thought this was a spoken word "Interview". It's Power Pop, and a great find at that. These guys sound a lot like Split Enz, but be fair warned, there are some slow songs on here as well.

Share:

Tim Curry - Fearless (1979)

MEMORY
I never cared for Tim Curry, acting or singer, and proves it ... I do remember this song and found it amusing if anything. I could listen to this played backwards, at half speed, and it's better than any Joy Division song.

Wayne County & the Electric Chairs - Things Your Mother Never Told You (1979)

DISCOVERED
Another release from Wayne? Jayne? & the Electric Chairs, whatever, who ever he or she is, it's some great Punk Rock.

Flying Squad - Flying Squad (1978)

DISCOVERED
I didn't know what to expect from both the album cover, band name and title. This is a very nice Rock release that reminds me a little of Point Blank or Axe.
BACKROOM BOYS (NIGHT AFTER NIGHT)
Share:

The New Order - The New Order (1977)

DISCOVERED
This is borderline Hard Rock Punk Rock, so I love it. Never heard of these guys and it's most likely a result of the New Wave band 'New Order'. This is unpolished and has mediocre production, but it's still pretty darn good.
ROCK 'N' ROLL SOLDIERS
Share:

Jackson Browne - Running on Empty (1977)

MEMORY
Loadout/Stay ...When this came out the radio played the living shit out of it. To the point of, where I would change the station after hearing one note. It's a great song, but it still puts me to sleep. I prefer the title track.

D.O.A. - Disco Sucks (1979)

DISCOVERED

This 4 pack of songs never hit my Punk Rock radar, nor do I recall it at Cutter's Basement.

Share:

Choir Invisible - Choir Invisible (1981)

DISCOVERED
This is as Dark or Goth...whatever....that I get. There is some really good stuff on here, and a little more polish may have helped this band out.

Share:

Pack - The Pack (1978)

DISCOVERED

Late 70s Punk....Nothing like it...When it's done well, and this is done very well. This is a trio from Germany. It's raw, and simple...It's perfect.

The Plugz - Electrify Me (1978)

Some post make it based on one song, this is one of them. A new Wave version of a Mexican folk song.

Share:

John Williams - Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

MEMORY
If adventure has a name…it must be "Indiana Jones"! My younger brother and I saw this at the theater at least 40 times, if not more. We listened to the soundtrack just as much. It was almost like seeing the movie. We knew exactly which scene each track was associated with. We loved that film and the iconic music. We grew fond of this track, which is NOT the main theme.

DESERT CHASE

Share:

The Sinceros - Sound of Sunbathing (1979)

DISCOVERED

I most likely never gave this band a listen based on the name, which sounds like a Latin salsa band. This is a Power Pop band that reminds me a little of Split Enz mixed in with a little bit of The Producers.
LITTLE WHITE LIE

Share:

Lucifer's Friend - Good Time Warrior (1978)

DISCOVERED
This reminds me of Kansas meets Boston. The guitar work isn't as awesome as Tom Scholz, nor are the vocals as good as Steve Walsh, but the songs are well done. At times it's a little more  piano than I prefer and it's about as Progressive as I go. Definitely worth a listen.

OLD MAN ROLLER

Share:

Michael Schenker Group - MSG (1981)

DISCOVERED

I used to think that Michael Schenker was overrated and distanced myself anything he was involved in. That's what happens there is an over abundance of music. This is good album. I can see how his guitar work gets attention. This is reminiscent of early Judas Priest, Rainbow and Whitesnake. There are some songs that I find mediocre at best, and others that clearly stand out.

READY TO ROCK

Share:

Anne Murray - I'll Always Love You (1979)

MEMORY
Not really a fan of slow soft love songs. Nearly all of the songs on this release are such. Once in a while there is one that is well written and well performed. When you can feel the emotions through music, that's magic.

BROKEN HEARTED ME

Share:

Knife Edge - Favourite Girl (1980)

DISCOVERED
Very rare and obscure, only 2000 copies were pressed from the band out of Leeds. It's a shame bands like this got no recognition. Reminds a little of a rawer version of The Knack meets The Members. I included both track from this band that only produced this single.

Share:

Karen Silver - Hold on I'm Comin' (1979)

DISCOVERED
It's a wonder where this song was. Since it was from 1979, it is quite possible it just missed it's window. If this came out in  77 or 78, this would have been big, and if there was a radio version.

HOLD ON, I'M COMIN'

Share:

Jon English - Calm Before the Storm (1980)

DISCOVERED
From everything I seen about this, I thought this was going to be a Pop release. It's Not... it's Rock, and it's not too bad. It reminds me of Billy Satellite meets Toney Carey. There is only two slow songs, the rest rock and are done well, and it is filled with energy and fun.

Share:

Barbara Law - Take All of Me (1980)

DISCOVERED
This is much better than I thought it would be. There are plenty of really well done disco tunes on this. Well, it's something special when you can hear a song, and it gives you more than what you expected. After giving this a listen, it's time for a.....

Mötley Crüe ‎– Too Fast For Love (1981)

MEMORY
For me this is the Genesis of my infatuation for Heavy Metal. Punk was just about dying out, and in comes METAL. In comes Mötley Crüe. It's what your parents didn't want you to listen to...Raw, Loud, Rude Evil, it was the Seven Deadly Sins in the form of music. This is a front to back listen, knowing every song, every lyric, every solo, every cowbell, every harmonic.

Exile - Mixed Emotions (1978)

MEMORY

Getting ready for school in the morning, was it WZUU, WRKR or WKTI? I dunno, I do remember when the featured song came out. I didn't hear anything else off of this until now. It's a little more funky than I thought. I was expecting maybe country rock. It's pretty good. Very light, and easy on the ears. It's like the Doobie Brothers meet The O'jays.
KISS YOU ALL OVER

Share:

Heavy Load - Metal Conquest (1981)

DISCOVERED
Early 80s Heavy Metal, from Sweden. This may have been bigger than if the production value was a little better. At times the drums are bit 'dead' and the vocals are buried a bit, but it's Heavy Metal!

DARK KNIGHTS

Share:

Chopper - Chopper (1979)

DISCOVERED

This is about as Country Rock as I get. I never heard of these guys before and I gave them a listen. It wasn't anything special until I got to the 6th track. I am going to re listen to this at some time as some of the tracks may very well end up in rotation.
I'll HOLD ON TO YOU

Share:

Elvis Costello - This Year's Model (1978)

DISCOVERED
Elvis was all over the place and I never gave him his due. I'm not sure if it was because of his name or his look. I thought it was all too contrived and dismissed his music. Big mistake. Once you adapt to his vocal style, his music is brilliant. This is the album that brought us "Pump It Up", but there are many many more really great songs on here.
PUMP IT UP

Share:

G-Force - G-Force (1980)

DISCOVERED
If you like 80s Hard Rock, this is for you. Gary Moore and G-Force it's like Journey meets Night Ranger, but better. Gary Moore's amazing guitar work is on here and I never knew the even existed until Victims Of The Future came out, and my mortis operandi was not to go back and listen to what he had done prior. This is very very good, even though there are some slower stuff on here. The reason Gary Moore is my favorite guitar player, it's because you can feel and hear the emotion trough his guitar.

The Boomtown Rats - The Fine Art of Surfacing (1979)

MEMORY
I always found Bob Geldof a little snooty and full of himself, then Bono arrive on the scene and Bob wasn't so bad after all. I do like The Boomtown Rats at least for the most part. At times they are like the Tubes or Oingo Boingo and go off on some goofy tangent. I remember there was a video for this song and thought it was okay...There are better songs on this to be honest with you.
I DON'T LIKE MONDAYS

Share:

Trooper - Thick as Thieves (1978)

MEMORY
I have a little problem with rock bands that overuse keyboards that sound like a straight up piano. I find it a little distracting and out of sorts. Well the first song started that way and didn't know what the rest would be like. Overall it's not bad. The songs are well written, the musicianship is there, and there are some really nice harmonies. The last two tracks are more to my liking, in fact the last song doesn't sound like it even belongs on this album. When I first heard the featured song, it blew me away.It is an iconic Rock and Roll anthem!

RAISE A LITTLE HELL

Share:

Gina X Performance - Nice Mover (1979)

DISCOVERED
Looking like Grace Jones, I didn't know what would be on here, but more or less I nailed it, very similar to something Grace would do. I don't care for experimental music that is just noise without any premise of melody. This made it on here....barely.

PLASTIC SURPRISE BOX

Nick Gilder - Rock America (1981)

DISCOVERED
I was very surprised by this release, quite a difference in style and sound from his earlier releases. This is fantastic!! To me this is his best thing he has ever done. This has a very noticeable Cars sound to it. I enjoy listening to a new album, and having to decide which track I like the most, and to feature. I am just going with the Title Track and suggest you listen to the rest of this.

Fingerprintz - Beat Noir (1981)

DISCOVERED
New Wave from the 80s was abundant and everywhere you looked and listened. This release never hit my radar. This isn't too bad utilizing Male and Female vocals. It's about as minimal and experimental as I get. It's not anything I would put in musical rotation, but worthy of a post.

GOING, GOING, GONE

Share:

Earth, Wind & Fire - I Am (1979)

MEMORY
This was another Roller Skating song that was played at least once a night. The songs has such a nice flow to it and the vocals are amazing. There was a ballad on here that got over played but if you want to Boogie, you need to get to the Wonderland.

The Whispers - Imagination (1980)

DISCOVERED
There aren't too many male vocal disco albums that I have found, that I like, but this is one of them. The melody and harmonies are really well done.

IT'S A LOVE THING

Share:

Pam Todd - Let's Get Together (1977)

DISCOVERED
Once in a while I find something that is totally cool and bizarre at the same time. Here is a disco version of Popeye The Sailor Man. The song itself has a small part which the chorus is actually sang, so it's not really a cover,  but it's pretty dang cool.

Share:

Ozz - No Prisoners (1980)

DISCOVERED

Wow, where did this come from, and why don't I know about this? I wonder if the name of the band confused or considered Ozzy?.. No matter, this is really really good. It's like a Hard Rock version of Pablo Cruise. Loud guitars and awesome vocals. Doing some research apparently the bass player from Rainbow as well as Gary Moore, Graig Gruber was a member of this band.

There is something about the Belfast Punk bands that automatically makes them good. I'm not sure if it's the accent, their sound, or their musical influences.

Silvetti - Concert from the Stars (1979)

DISCOVERED

I don't know where the love for Disco comes from. It does remind me of when I was 14 and 15, and had no responsibility. We did take extensive family trips and we didn't fly. So it was via our Buick Station Wagon with the wood grain sides. The music of choice was Disco to appease my mom. So we got doses and doses of it. Granted, this was not one of the groups we heard, but very reminiscent of what was played.

Teena Marie - It Must Be Magic (1981)

DISCOVERED
Before there was Lovergirl, there was this release from Teena Marie. Sad to find out she passed away in 2010 from a massive seizure at the age of 54.

This is pretty good, and you definitely can that iconic Teena Marie vocal.

As far as Disco goes, this is decent. It's well crafted and has all the pieces that make that GOOD Disco sound. And then there is this on here as well...
